The discussion around generative AI starts with the acknowledgment that no AI model can predict major events when we need it, as evidenced by the pandemic. There is a great need for visibility, which is the fundamental prerequisite of transformative technology.
Generative AI and machine learning can be perceived as probabilistic, but not necessarily realistic. Products like ChatGPT are based on data and statistics to provide insightful information, but as advanced as it is, it’s not always accurate or can’t make a fully transformative impact.
Engineers working with these large language models understand that it takes a tremendous amount of energy to generate one token (similar to blockchain) when utilizing this type of technology. At the end of the day, it’s the same problem encountered with cryptocurrency by posing the question of where we find the real economic value.
Leonard Lee mentioned, “You have to understand the limitations of technology before you can have a clear view of the actual potential.” This rings true, because to generate the next token for AI technology, it takes a tremendous amount of energy and enormous bandwidth to transfer massive amounts of data from its memory to the processor. The interconnects needed to make this happen are highly involved and complex. That is why there are debates about whether this technology is valuable in the long term.
At the end of the day, the innovations created by generative AI will likely prove useful in enhancing other types of applications. However, as with other technological advancements, the question remains, “What problem are you trying to solve?” “Does technology make an impact with the problems you’re trying to solve?” and “How valuable is it really, and how sustainable is it?”
